How long have you been playing drums?: "I bought my first set
and paid for them by playing music in October of 69." First gig with B.J.: June 6, 1981: "I went from playing with
Joe Savage in little Holiday Inns for about 150 people. My first gig went from that to a
place in Dallas, TX, I believe. It was packed. It was about 10 or 20 thousand people and
there were people 10 feet behind me, all around me. And I, like, got my notes up here.
Ive never even met B.J. Ive learned the songs. The first time I see him is
when he walks on stage to do the show and says, "Hi." I was just scared to
death." When youre not on the road, what do you like to do?: "I
like working in the yard, trimming, planting flowers. Go bowling sometimes. I like to go
to the movies." Memorable Moment During a Show: "I liked when we played the
Palomino. Michael McDonald is sitting down front with his fiancée. It was his engagement
party. He had just proposed and they came to see B.J. And Al Jarreau, I could see him.
Hes in the back watching. And Phil Everly was there. Al Jarreau and Michael McDonald took the time to come to the Palomino, that hole in the wall. That was pretty memorable. Another time was when Al Wilson came out on stage in a mask because Al didnt like to be around cigarette smoke. All of us coming out on stage in masks. That was pretty funny." What do you like best about touring with B.J.: "The traveling.
I love moving along. I dont like it when we have days off when were not
working. I want to work every day. And just going from town to town and just seeing
everybody smiling and having a good time. And coming up and telling us, "You guys
sounded great." We have a great time. The traveling is the hard part. That hour up
there makes it all worth while. To see those people smile and telling us after were
done how much of a good time they had and how great it sounded." Something about you that the fans would be interested to know:
"I used to like roller skating a lot. I love riding a bicycle. And I just recently
switched from wanting a Harley to wanting a wave runner. Its more fun than a
motorcycle." Favorite Sport and/or Team: "Got to be basketball. I like the
Chicago Bulls because Michael Jordan is from North Carolina! And college
ball, the Tar Heels because theyre from North Carolina!"
